Peat soils are a vital resource in terms of their carbon sequestration capacity. However, their use in agriculture and the application of pesticides threatens their structural stability, resulting in increased carbon emissions to the atmosphere. To remedy this, the effect of Costus afer extract on soil properties was evaluated. The experiment was conducted in Songon under rice cultivation. The extract was applied at different stages of rice development. The soil solution and the aqueous extract were analyzed under the microscope to determine the observed changes. The observations show a development of microorganisms in the aqueous extract of Costus afer. There was also an abundant proliferation of soil organisms. The presence of fungal filaments and cocci in the soil solution was noted. This presence of bacteria (cocci) justifies the biogeochemical activity of the soil studied in its natural condition. These filaments, observed under the microscope, cause specific welds by anastomosis, agglomerate the soil particles, and thus play an important role in soil structuring. However, the results obtained need to be strengthened by quantifying the carbon stored in the soil to assess its effectiveness in the ecological function of the soil.
