This study assessed the efficacy of various insecticides and a rotational application strategy in managing onion thrips (Thrips tabaci) and their impact on bulb yield in Fogera plain, Ethiopia. Over two consecutive years, treatments including Dimethoate, Imidacloprid, Profenofos-Spinetoram, λ-cyhalothrin and a rotational strategy (Imidacloprid-Profenofos-Spinetoram-λ-cyhalothrin) were evaluated for their effectiveness in reducing thrips populations and enhancing marketable bulb yields. Results indicated that Dimethoate consistently provided the most effective and sustained control of thrips populations, while the rotational strategy showed promising short-term efficacy with some variability over time. Statistical analysis revealed no significant differences in thrips control efficacy among treatments (p > 0.05), emphasizing their comparable performance. Moreover, Dimethoate and the rotational strategy significantly increased marketable bulb yields compared to other treatments, underscoring their role in improving onion crop productivity. Economic analysis highlighted P- I- L-P (Imidacloprid-Profenofos-Spinetoram-λ-cyhalothrin) and Profenofos as economically advantageous options, providing high net benefits with low variability. These findings suggest that Dimethoate and strategic rotational applications are pivotal for integrated pest management in onions, offering both effective pest control and economic benefits. Recommendations include continued adoption of effective pesticides, regular monitoring of pest populations, and policies supporting sustainable pest management practices.
