Abstract:

Aquatic toxicology, the study of contaminants in aquatic ecosystems and their impacts on organisms, is crucial for understanding environmental health and sustaining fisheries. It examines the effects of chemical pollutants such as pesticides, heavy metals, pharmaceuticals, and emerging contaminants on aquatic life, addressing key processes like bioaccumulation, biomagnification, and ecological imbalance. This review explores the toxicological mechanisms affecting fish populations, biodiversity, and ecosystem stability, emphasizing the role of biomarkers and environmental monitoring in detecting pollution-induced stress. Additionally, it evaluates regulatory frameworks and Environmental Risk Assessments (ERA), highlighting challenges and advocating for advanced approaches to safeguard water quality and fisheries
