Abstract:

Population growth and rapid urbanization in Niamey are placing increasing pressure on the urban environment. These pressures result in a multitude of environmental problems that affect both people and ecosystems. This study aims to identify the main environmental problems in the city of Niamey, their severity, their sources, their impacts, and adaptation strategies. A household survey was conducted on 625 households across Niamey’s various municipal districts The data was analyzed and processed using the R software. In total, eight (8) problems were identified, including air pollution, water pollution, the proliferation of solid waste, urbanization, lack of green space, flooding, loss of biodiversity, and sand encroachment. Air pollution was the problem most frequently cited by households (20%), followed by the proliferation of solid waste (16%) and water pollution (12%). The results show that the problems vary by municipal district, with ACI and AC II affected by air pollution, AC III by solid waste, AC IV by water pollution, and AC V by flooding. An analysis of environmental issues highlights the vulnerability of the city of Niamey and underscores the need to strengthen management measures.
